Not like I'm an expert on this matter. But here's a few tips I hope you will find useful.

Get the world to know you

No matter how good you are, customers are not going to knock on your door (until you build a strong reputation, that is), so a little bit of PR and networking will be really useful.

There are different translation-specific sites where you can list your profile for free: GLT, OPM, LocalizationCareers, larseng11n.

Social Networks (LinkedIn, twitter, Facebook) provide good opportunities. Don't be shy, don't be part of the silent majority. Let yourself be heard, although make sure to observe netiquette. Here's a good starting to explore social networking.

Professional associations can also give a boost to your career. I personally recommend ATA.

Finally, get your own spot in the Web. Ideally a web site, but a blog sharing your experiences can also be useful. I recommend Wordpress
